International Residential Code, 2006 Edition
Publisher: International Code Council (ICC)
Retail Price: $68
This book contains more than 600 pages of charts,
technical specifications and accepted building practices. It is great
as a reference source, but not for casual reading. This is the
publication that is used for the open-book test to obtain ICC
certification. Those who use the International Residential Code as a
reference book may find that index lacks sufficient detail or entries.

Real Estate Home Inspection: Mastering the Profession
Author: Russell W. Burgess
Retail Price: $90
This 450+ page book is well-written and contains quizzes
that re-cap each chapter. A helpful index and glossary make it easy to
use as a reference book as well. This is one of the books that
NAHI recommends in preparation for the CRI exam.

The Complete Book of Home Inspection
Author: Norman Becker, P.E.
Retail Price: $20
An easy read of about 280 pages and ideal as a book for
beginners as well as for homeowners who want good advice on maintaining
the components of their homes. The chapters do not contain much
technical detail, nor is the glossary extensive. Therefore, this
is not the first choice as reference material. However, NAHI does
recommend this book in preparation for the CRI exam.

The Illustrated Home
Author: Carson Dunlop
Retail Price: $239 (includes book and companion CD)
This book and its companion CD contain more than 1500
diagrams of just about every type of component you will likely
encounter during an inspection. It has a very thorough index.
There is no narrative in this reference book, only illustrations. The CD is very useful if you want to include diagrams to
illustrate a point in your inspection report. It's pricey but bargains
can be found on ebay.
